Public realm & cultural landscape
A square beside an art school
The site already supported open-air exhibitions. The project strengthens that culture and gives it a recognisable public setting connected to Kostanay’s larger bird-based urban identity.
The waxwing as spatial language
The bird’s bright plumage and flight dynamics inform the colour, geometry and movement of the square. Natural identity is translated into an urban object without becoming literal decoration.
A structure for art
The central element combines a practical display system for paintings and posters with a sculptural interpretation of a moving wing. It supports exhibitions and everyday use at the same time.
The built fragment proves the system
As an implemented square, Waxwing demonstrates how the wider green framework can become specific, useful and memorable at a human scale.
